All living organisms are composed of cells and all cells arise from other cells. The continuity of life from one cell to another is based on the reproduction of cells via cell division. The division process occurs as part of the cell cycle. All multicellular organisms, use cell division for growth and maintenance and repair of cells and tissues. Single celled organisms use cell division as their method of reproduction.
Cell division is tightly regulated. The cell cycle is an ordered series of events involving two major phases, interphase and mitotic phase. During interphase, the cell grows and DNA is replicated. During mitotic phase, the replicated DNA and cytoplasmic contents are separated and the cell divides.
