## Solution

Flowering plants have been divided into two major groups: the dicots and the monocots on the basis of number of cotyledons. For example, angiosperms. Gymnosperms are seed-bearing vascular plants, such as $$cycads$$, $$ginkgo$$ and $$conifers$$ are not divided into monocots and dicots, and the ovules or seeds are not enclosed in an ovary. The number of cotyledons in the embryos of seeds of gymnosperms is highly variable, ranging from $$8-20$$.
