Question and Answer

Anhydrous \(AlCl_3\) is covalent. From the data given below, predict whether it would remain covalent or become ionic in aqueous solution (ionisation enthalpy for \(Al=5137\;kJmol^{-1}\) \(\Delta H_{hydration} of Al^{3+}=-4655kJmol^{-1})\) and \(\Delta H_{hydration} of \;Cl^{-}=381kJmol^{-1}\)

Answer

\(Al^{3+} + 3Cl^{-} \to AlCl_3\)
The energy released during hydration of \(Al^{3+}\) and \(Cl^{-}\) ions \(=-4655+3(-381)=-5798kJmol^{-1}\)
Since, the energy released during hydration is greater than the ionisation enthalpy for \(AlCl_3\). Hence, \(AlCl_3\) will be ionic in solution. Ionisation enthalpy for \(Al=5137\;kJmol^{-1}\).
